Cyril Norman EllenAfter joining the Royal Naval Air Service in April 1915, Cyril volunteered for training as an observer. During June 1916, when he was serving on HMS Riviera, he was employed as an observer patrolling the Belgian Coast. In November 1916, he was granted a temporary commission as Sub-Lieutenant Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (R.N.V.R.) and underwent additional Observer training.
