Richard FRYER - (Abt. 1663 - 1710)
Richard FRYER was born in approximately 1663. His headstone gives us a clue as to his age and the fact he was from Overton, Arlingham, Gloucestershire. There was a baptism in Arlingham of a Richard the son of Richard Fryer of Overton on 12th November 1667 but it is impossible to be sure if this was indeed for the same Richard.
Photographs of Arlingham can be seen in the
Gallery section of this web site.

Richard was married to Mary. The parish registers for Leonard Stanley recorded a marriage of a Richard Ffrier to a Mary Haines on 23rd February 1690. This may well be the correct marriage as their first child, Mary, was baptized almost a year later but further evidence is required to corroborate this supposition.

Richard wrote a will shortly before he died. Although it stated that his profession was a clothier, his headstone recorded him as a yeoman. The will reads as follows...
In the name of God Amen I Richard Fryer of Overton within the parish of Arlingham in the County of Gloucr Clothier being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory (thanks be to God for the same) I do make and ordain this my last Will and Testmt in Writing following First I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it trusting in the alone Meritts? of Jesus Christ to be saved and my body I remitt to the earth hoping for a joyful resurrection of the same to eternal happiness And as for that worldly Estate and goods wch God hath been pleased to bless me with I give and dispose thereof and followeth Imprs All those my Closes of pasture meadow ground and arable lands lying in Arlingham aforesaid wch are not mentioned and ? in the settlement wch I make to my wife Mary I give and devise to my children Elizabeth Richard Mary and Anne and to their heirs and Assigns forever Provided nevertheless and upon this condition and my Will is That if my Eldest Son John Fryer doe? and shall pay to the said four children when and for ? as they shall finally attain to their Severall ages of twenty and one years each after other the Sum of Fifty pounds a piece then I will that their Estate? of and in the ? aforesaid so by me to them devised as aforesaid shall cease? and my devise to them thereof shall be utterly void Item I give to my son Thomas the Sum of Fifty pounds to be paid to him when he shall attain to his age of twenty and one years Item I gift to my Daughter Anna the Sum of Fifty pounds to be paid to her when she shall attain to her the age of twenty and one years Item I gift to my Eldest Son John Fryer our bed with the furniture and appurtenances thereunto belonging Lastly all the rest of my personall goods cattle and chattels whatsoever not before herein by me given and Disposed I give and bequeath to my deare and loving wife Mary whom I make and constitute whole and sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testamt to whom I remitt the tuition of my children during their Minorityed? not doubting of her Motherly affection and care towards them to see them virtuously educated In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal the Eleventh day of Aprill in the Ninth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Ann by the grace of God of great Britain France and Ireland Queen Defender of the Faith ? The will was proved on 7th April 1711 by Mariam
Ffryer (Mary Fryer, widow). These details are noted in Latin on the
will.
Richard died before his youngest son, Joseph, was born and probably did not know of his wife's pregnancy because the forthcoming child was not mentioned in the will. He did, however, seem to be concerned that his children should receive a proper education and may well have been literate himself as he signed his name on the will.
Interestingly, the witnesses to the will included Joseph Haynes junior and senior. Could these two men have been related to Richard's wife if she was indeed Mary 'Haines'?

Richard died in 1710 and the Arlingham Parish Registers recorded the event as follows...
"Richard Fryer Overton was buried April 21st 1710"
Photographs of the church at Arlingham can be seen in the
Gallery.
