Biography and source notes for George ASHBY
George was born in Hadstock, Essex in 1848, the third child of Robert and Eliza Ashby.
There is some speculation as to whether he was originally called Thomas as there is a baptism record in the Hadstock parish registers for a Thomas Ashby on 18th June 1848 but an official birth was registered between April and Jun of that year for a George Ashby in the district of Linton. In addition, there does not seem to be any further mention of Thomas on the census records, however we do see George.
