In the above photograph, the Golden Butterfly is situated
down the street on the left, just beyond where the
red-brick building protrudes. The kiosk was
originally located opposite the shop.

The Golden Butterfly, 2 Market Street, Saffron
Walden, Essex
Ivy Alice Dando was born in 1904 at 2 Market Street,
Saffron Walden, Essex. The census in 1901 listed Ivy's grandmother, Mary
Ann Free (nee Ashby) as a confectioner and her father, Charles Llewellyn
Ernest Elbert Dando as a tobacconist. Living there too was Charles'
wife, Alice Dando (nee Free).
It is believed that Mary Ann Free originally had a
confectionery and tobacco kiosk on the other side of Market Street,
opposite the shop, before they were at number 2. Apparently, the Golden
Butterfly name has been the same at both locations since their
establishment, named after a brand of tobacco. Over the last 100 years
not much has changed, the shop still sells a full range of loose
confectionery and tobacco.
