The newspapers published the following obituaries after Israel died...
HATHERLEIGH.
DEATH OF A TRAFALGAR VETERAN. - An Australian paper records the death of Israel Edwards, who for the last twenty five years has been residing at Brighton, South Australia. He had attained the great age of 102 years, according to the register of his death, but is supposed to have been some six or seven years older than that ; his relatives, however, were unable to specify his exact age with any certainty beyond that given. Deceased was not married until 45, and his eldest daughter was said to be 62, which would make him 107 or 108. He was born in the County of Devon, about eight miles from Hatherleigh, at which place he was married, his wife being about 21, and on account of her youth strong objection was made by her friends to the match. At an early age he entered the navy, and was present at the battle of Trafalgar when the great Nelson was killed. Of this period of life the old man was very proud, and so great was his veneration for the memory of Nelson that he had a picture of his death hung over the head of his bed. Edwards had been in many engagements, but never wounded. He appears to have left the navy without a pension, and to have lived an industrious life at his native place. He became a widower at 60, and when at an age that but comparatively few attain, he decided to emigrate to Australia with his family. He lived at Adelaide some five years, and then left for Victoria, and after spending a year or two on the diggings, settled down in Brighton for the rest of his life. There he has one son and four daughters living and one daughter at Gelong. He had lived in Brighton 25 years, and although past work he could get about. He is said, indeed, to have had hardly a day's sickness. In appearance he was of medium height, bent slightly with age, but his hair, strange to say, had not turned white, and at his decease was but very slightly grey. He possessed a good memory of past events, although it was gradually failing him. He had always led a strictly temperate life.
-----------------
A TRAFALGAR VETERAN.
There died at Brighton on Sunday Israel Edwards, one of the remaining few who fought with Nelson at Trafalgar, and perhaps the oldest man in Victoria. His age is variously stated at 102 and 106, but the exact number of years will not be known until information on the point is received from England. Edwards was born about eight miles from Hatherleigh, in Devonshire, of respectable parents, and at an early age entered the Royal Navy. He was for some time on board the Bellerophon and was present at the battle of Trafalgar, but on board of what ship is not known. He is supposed to have been on board the Victory, and to have run to pick up Nelson when he fell. He apparently left the navy before he became entitled to a pension, and settled in Hatherleigh. At the age of 45 he married, his wife being 21. In July, 1847, his wife having died, he went with his family to Adelaide, and five years afterwards came to Victoria. For some few years he was on the diggings, but he afterwards took up his residence at Brighton, where he has one son and four daughters. One daughter-Mrs. Pye-resides in Geelong. Since his residence at Brighton he has been too infirm to do anything, although able to get about. The last three years of his life have been spent entirely with his daughter, Mrs. Brown Cox, wife of a borough contractor.
-----------------
There is no surviving evidence to support the suggestion Israel was in the Navy. A search of the Trafalgar Ancestors website does not reveal a record and there is no mention of him in the records at the National Archives, collection ADM 29/1-96.
Israel's age is a matter for debate. He was baptized in 1786, making it quite likely that he was approximately 91 when he died, rather than over 100.
In the obituaries, there is also an inconsistency about the death of his wife. The passenger list shows that she travelled to Australia with him in 1847 and her death record shows she died in 1860.
