Collation: One form of appointment to an ecclesiastical office, either to a benefice or as a dignitary. This term was applied when the ordinary, usually but not always the diocesan bishop, appointed to a living of which he was the patron or which a lapse had brought within his gift. When a clergyman was appointed to a living by collation, there was no presentation or institution, but collation was followed by induction or installation.

Institution: One form of an appointment to a benefice or dignity. Institution was the act by which a bishop or other ordinary committed a living to the care of a clergyman. It followed after a presentation, the cleric's subscription, and the receipt of letters testimonial, and was followed by induction or installation. It was the only one of these events normally recorded in the episcopal register or act book, and as such can be regarded as furnishing the date from which an appointment commenced.

Cession: One of several ways in which an incumbent's tenure could be terminated. Although pluralism was commonplace in the Church of England until severely limited by new statute law after the end of the period of the Database, many clergymen were not eligible to hold livings in plurality and certain combinations of offices were forbidden by ecclesiastical law. When a cleric was appointed to a living that could not be held alongside his current position, the latter living was deemed void by cession.

  16. History of Okehampton Grammar School by W. Hunter B.SC., (Read at Okehampton, 22nd July 1925.)
From that date [1610], down to its suspension in 1806, the office of grammar schoolmaster was combined with that of chaplain of St. James' Chapel, both under the jurisdiction of the Corporation. Research among the town records has brought to light much of the history of the school from 1610, and in particular a book of agreements of the several schoolmasters, bearing their signatures and those of the Mayor and Corporation, has made it possible to compile a full list of the persons holding the dual office.

Here is a typical form of agreement, that of Mr. Randall:- .

"It is agreed on and fully consented to, that Mr. John Randall shall have liberty to teach scholars at the School House of the town and borough during the pleasure of the Mayor, Principal Burgesses and Assistants for the time being, and it is agreed on that the said Mr. Randall shall read Common Prayer at the Chapel mornings and evenings, and that he shall preach four Sessions Sermon every year, and that the said Mr. Randall shall instruct 6 or 8 poor children freely, such as the Mayor for the time being shall think fit, and that the said Mr. Randall for, and in consideration of his pains in the discharge of the duty incumbent upon him, shall have liberty to dwell in the school house, and that he shall have £15 yearly in the gift of the Mayor and Burgesses in recompense of his pains, and it is moreover agreed that the said Mr. Randall shall preach a sermon once every year at the election of the Mayor, provided it shall be free for the Mayor for the time being to have whom he pleaseth to preach at any session or election held for the town and borough. Witness our hands and seals this day," etc.

The history of the school as known at present can be best shown by a chronological table of the schoolmasters, with a record of events happening during the regime of some of them…

It was rebuilt in the following year and improved. "This Spring the School was new built with a chamber over it, and new heated, which was before a thatched school without a chamber over it."
