    CANON STUART KING
We, the undersigned, desire to inform your readers that Canon R. Stuart King, rector of Leigh-on-Sea, will celebrate the golden jubilee of his priesthood next Trinity-tide. For 47 years Canon King has ministered to the parishioners of Leigh, having been born there, and succeeding his father as rector. He has been responsible for greatly enlarging the parish church by the addition of a Lady Chapel, south aisle and vestries, inaugurating two daughter churches, building a large parish hall, and maintaining a mission church for fishermen. Through the inspiration he has given, many men of Leigh have been led to take Holy Orders, and the parish has a record of steady progress among the laity. Canon King was Proctor in Convocation for many years. He was also chairman of the Leigh Urban District Council for some considerable time. We intend that some concrete evidence of our gratitude to him should mark his jubilee, and we are now making an appeal to all who know him, or who have worshipped in the old church of St. Clement, to subscribe towards a testimonial. The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed his great satisfaction that a presentation is to be made, as has also the Bishop of Chelsmford, Lord Iveagh, the Mayor of Southend, Sir Frederick Senier, and Mr. Henry Channon, M.P. for the borough, have also kindly lent their patronage. We propose utilizing the subscriptions received to create a trust fund to be administered for the benefit of this grand old parish priest in his advancing years, to relieve him of any financial anxiety. Donations will be gratefully received by the treasurer of the appeal, G.F.D. Bundock, Esq., St. Clement’s Hall, Leigh-on-Sea. – ELLIS N. GOWING (Archdeacon), C.E. WILLIS, G.F.D. BUNDOCK (Churchwardens), W.J. JENNER (Assistant Priest), A.E. SMITHER (Hon. Secretary of Appeal).
