There is some confusion as to who Matilda's parents were and what her surname was before her marriage. She appears on the 1861 census as Matilda Reed, daughter of Joseph and Caroline Reed. Mary Fryer is also in the household. Mary Pitcher Fryer married Joseph Reed in the following year. In 1881, Matilda appears as Matilda J Young and is living with her uncle and aunt, Joseph Mills and Sophia Mills (nee Fryer). Mary P Reed, Sophia Mills and Caroline Young were all Fryer sisters. Matilda does not appear anywhere with Caroline Young unless the Caroline living with Joseph Reed in 1861 is actually her. Nevertheless, Matilda married using the name, Young. Neither Caroline or her husband, James Young, have been found after 1861. Was Matilda the daughter of Joseph Reed and a completely different Caroline, or Joseph Reed and Caroline Fryer/Young, or was she the daughter of James Young and Caroline Fryer/Young, or the daughter of Joseph Reed and Mary Fryer/Reed? Matilda's husband, Charles Vick, was the son of yet another Fryer sister, Ann Vick (nee Fryer), so it is possible that Matilda and Charles were first cousins.
